Sierra Leone officials have reported a suspected Ebola case, days after Guinea’s Health Ministry confirmed that four people have died of Ebola at a hospital in the Guinean – Sierra Leone border town of Guerkedou.
The Sierra Leonean Ministry of Health and Sanitation announced a suspected Ebola case in Kpanga Chiefdom, Pujehun.
There are fears this could spark a resurgence of the Ebola pandemic, amid rising number of Coronavirus cases in West Africa.
Exactly six years ago, the first case of Ebola in the region was discovered at the Guerkedou hospital, suspected of having fallen ill of the virus in Sierra Leone and was taken to the Guerkedou hospital in Guinea.
Guinea’s health minister Remy Lamah said yesterday that officials are concerned about the deaths of the four people, the first since the 2013 to 2016 epidemic, when more than 11,000 people died of the Ebola virus.
The latest reports have sparked concern among Liberian, including former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
“In light of the reported #Ebola outbreak in Guinea, I urge all Liberians to be vigilant and immediately report those with the symptoms we know so well. We have made it through Ebola before—let us band together once again to protect against the devastation we endured”, the former president said via Twitter.
Pundits believe it’s time for the Government of Liberia to immediately take actions to safeguard the country’s borders as eminent danger hangs.
